During their years on the Board of Lions Clubs International, Past President Al Brandel and Lion Dr. Maureen Murphy celebrated the "Everyday Heroes" who performed "Miracles Through Service".
Throughout their travels they were frequently drawn to a cause close to both of their hearts - children.
For 20 of his 35 years as a Detective with the Nassau County Police Department on Long Island, NY, Past President Al had been assigned to the Juvenile Aid Bureau specializing in cases involving child abuse, missing children and domestic violence involving children.
At the conclusion of his year as International President, 2008 - 2009, Al and Maureen decided to place all the donations and gifts they had received throughout his campaign into the Foundation that bears their name. With this large amount of seed money, a Board of Trustees was formed and a plan was put into effect.
Since 2011, through the generosity of Lions throughout Multiple District 20 (New York State and Bermuda) and around the world, the Foundation has distributed 108 grants totaling $184,984 through both our $2,000 matching Humanitarian Youth Grants and our $2,500 Emergency Youth Grant programs. Due to the efforts of those Lions who have applied for these grants over 141,510 children in need have received assistance.

His partner in service, Lion Dr. Maureen, is a medical doctor whose specialty is Pediatric Anesthesia.
They have seen first hand how the lives of children can be transformed through dedicated service. When their time on the Board was over it was their dream to form a Foundation dedicated to that same cause - helping the lives of children in need. That dream has now become a reality with the formation of The Brandel - Murphy Youth Foundation.
